Investments

At The Phone Co-op we put our money where our mouth is. For example, we’ve invested £27,500 in projects which combine community-ownership with renewable energy generation.

Wind power

Base of a wind turbime with people coming outWe’ve invested £20,000 in Westmill Wind Farm Co-operative in south Oxfordshire where they have constructed five wind turbines which are supplying green electricity to power more than 2,500 homes. This is the first onshore wind farm to be built in the south-east of England and is 100% community-owned.

Power to the people

We’ve also invested £7,500 from our Co-operative & Social Economy Development Fund in the UK’s first community-owned hydroelectric energy project at New Mills on the edge of the Peak District National Park.

Ariel view of Torrs HydroThe Torrs Hydro New Mills scheme has installed a huge reverse Archimedean screw which is generating 260,000kWh of electricity every year, enough to power around to 70 homes. One of the very first users is the local co-operative retail store.
