Creating a wireless connection

Step 1 - Setting up your equipment

Physical set up

Please read the Quick Start guide supplied with your router for instructions on how to connect it to your phone line, computer and power supply. Make sure you have everything you need before starting your broadband setup. Check that you have all the right cables, CDs and micro filters.

Please ensure that every phone socket in use has a micro filter plugged into it. Take care when plugging in your micro filters because incorrectly installed micro filters are a common cause of broadband faults.

Make sure that the router is connected to the master phone socket without the use of an extension cable and is connected with a micro filter.

Step 2 - Configuring your Computer

Instructions for Windows Users

1. Please ensure your PC is set to never dial a connection. To do this click on Start then Control Panel (if Control Panel isn’t visible you may need to click on Settings) then Internet Options (if the Internet Options icon isn’t visible click on switch to Classic view in the top left hand corner)

2. The Internet Options window will now open. Click on the Connection tab and select the option “never dial a connection”. Click Apply then OK. Your PC should now be set to use either a direct connection via your Ethernet cable or a wireless connection if available.

Instructions for Mac OSX Users

1. Click on the Apple menu and select System Preferences then click on Network.

Depending on the version of OSX you are using

2. Select the built in Ethernet option from the Show menu

or

Click on the built in Ethernet option from the list of available connections on the left hand side of the Network window.

3. Click on the TCP tab

4. Set configure to using DHCP and click Apply

You should now see the internal IP address of your router appear next to the Router heading signifying that your Mac can now see your router.

Step 3 - Configuring your Broadband Hardware

Please follow these instructions, depending on which equipment option applies to you:

Your router has been supplied by The Phone Co-op

If you have received a new router supplied by The Phone Co-op it will be pre-configured with your connection details and so all you have to do is plug it in.

Once switched on, the DSL light of the router (labelled “DSL” if you have a black router or the second light from the right if you have a white router) should begin to flash and after a brief period of time become steady. Shortly after this the internet light (labelled internet if you have a black router or the last light on the right if you have a white router) should start to flash to signify that you are connected to the internet.

If this doesn't happen please connect your router to the master phone socket via a micro filter with all other phone sockets disconnected. If after doing this the DSL light fails to come on please contact Customer Services on 0845 458 9000

If you are asked to choose between going to advanced set up or the set up wizard, select the advanced set up and click Apply.
