FC United of Manchester is a community football club owned and democratically run by its members. Its corporate structure is a Community Benefit Society and membership is open to all, with everyone an equal co-owner, holding one voting share in the club. It is a unique football club by having its obligations to its fans and local communities written into its constitution. The club was awarded UK’s Co-operative Excellence Award in 2009 for its cutting edge work with local communities.
Where possible the club aims to use suppliers with similar values and structures to their own. So engaging with The Phone Co-op was an obvious move. FC United have used the services of the Phone Co-op for more than 10 years now. They began with landlines and over the years have added broadband and now mobile phones for staff members.
The choice to use The Phone Co-op really was highly driven by a match in social values between the two organisations. But of course, the decision also needed to make commercial sense. “Over the years The Phone Co-op have provided us with a good service at competitive rates. But more than that, they have contributed towards the investment in our new football stadium. The stadium which was completed in June 2015 provides a space for our team members to play, but also for us to run our diverse community work programmes. The fact that The Phone Co-op actively invests in the community was definitely a big plus point
I would happily recommend The Phone Co-op to others. The service is good and the prices are competitive. But most importantly we feel that our money is being spent with an organisation that actively invests in the community, which is really important to us”.
