Setting up and help with your Fairphone 2

Getting started with your Fairphone 2

Setting up internet and MMS

If you have the most recent Fairphone software, you don't need to do anything to set up your Fairphone 2 to go online. See below for details of how to check if an update is available. If you have any problems, you may need to set up the data connection yourself. The Fairphone handset needs to be told, just once, how to connect to our network for 3G internet and picture messaging (MMS). We've produced some videos, and downloadable guides showing you how to do this.

Setting up a data limit

Set a warning, and a limit to the amount of data you want your Fairphone 2 to use in a given month. This will help you avoid going over your bundle allowance and getting charged extra. Please note, this is a software feature of Android, and not a service provided by The Phone Co-op, so we can't be responsible if it doesn't work!

Checking for software updates

Perform a software update to install the latest software on your Fairphone 2.

Updating to the latest software version is recommended as it may fix any existing problems and improve the performance of your Fairphone 2.

Your Fairphone 2 will check daily for updates when you connect to a Wifi network. If you don't see a notification about the new update, you can manually check for availability through the Fairphone Updater app.

To check for and perform and update, first make sure:

  • your Fairphone 2's battery is fully charged
  • your Fairphone 2 is connected to a Wifi network

To perform a Fairphone 2 software upgrade:

1. Go to the Homescreen.

2. Swipe from the right edge of the screen to the left to open the swipe menu.

3. Tap All Apps.

4. Scroll down.

5. Choose Updater.

6. If the following screen is displayed, a software update is available.

Choose INSTALL UPDATE.

If the above screen does not appear, your Fairphone 2 already has the latest software version.

7. Confirm your choice on the next screen by pressing INSTALL UPDATE again.

8. The update files will be downloaded. Depending on your connection speed this may take some time.

9. When the update files have been downloaded, Choose RESTART.

10. The update will be installed and your Fairphone 2 will reboot.

Some frequently asked questions

Does the Fairphone 2 come with a charger?

No, there is not a charger included in the box with your new Fairphone 2 because the universal micro-usb chargeable fits perfectly. You can order a separate charger at the same time you order your Fairphone 2.

Can i keep my current sim card, will it fit the Fairphone 2?

The Fairphone 2 is compatible with a 'micro' SIM card (ID-000 format), sized: 15mm x 12mm x 0.76mm. If you have a 'nano' or Mini SIM card, you can use a SIM adaptor (available in any electronics store or your calling plan provider). If you have a new sim card with your Fairphone 2 it will arrive separately to the phone.

What's the difference between iOS and Android?

These are 2 different operating systems; iOS is the operating system for Apple products, Android is used by numerous manufacturers such as Samsung and Fairphone. The operating system controls how the phone's interdface looks, what apps you can download, and how all actions are performed.

What do I do if I need help?

Call The Phone Co-op customer service team on 01608 434 000, and the team will be happy to help you.

What do I do if my Fairphone needs to be repaired?

If you're unlucky enough to experience a problem after the first 30 days of your contract with us then your handset will need to be returned to Fairphone for repair. You can send the handset to us and we will forward it to them on your behalf, or you can send the phone directly to them.

  • Should you want to send it to them directly the details on how to return the handset to them can be found here.
  • If you would prefer to send the handset to us here, the address can be found here.
How do I answer a call on the Fairphone 2 handset?

When the phone rings simply touch the inbound call icon that will appear on the screen and drag this icon to the right where you will see a green 'dot.' To cancel the call, or not answer the call drag the same icon to the red 'dot.'

My app is misbehaving

If one of your favourite apps is not behaving as it should - for instance, if Whatsapp isn't sending any photos - you may need to re-enable Privacy Impact. Go to Settings > Sound & Notifications > Privacy Impact, and untick Disable Privacy Impact popup. This is a known issue that should be fixed in the first Fairphone 2 software update.

My data service is stuck on 2G

This might happen if you are using 2 SIMs in your Fairphone 2. Only one SIM at a time can be set to use 3G or 4G, the other SIM automatically defaults to 2G. Go to Settings>More>Mobile networks. If one of your SIMs has Preferred network type greyed out, it's because the other one is set to 3G or 4G. Change the other one to 2G only to change the service on your preferred card. Don't forget to go to Settings > SIM cards to tell your Fairphone 2 which SIM you want to use for data.

I can't get the back on

It takes practice! Check the video at the top of the page to see how it's done. Our top tip is to use the piece of plastic you pushed your SIM out of (or a debit card. A guitar pick is good as well!) to get under the rim and lever it over the edge of the screen.

I want to return my Fairphone 2. It's broken, or it's not what I expected.

Oh dear! Sorry to hear that. Our returns policy and process is set out on our Returns page.
